Today we celebrate the festival of Narak Chaturdashi the festival is also called as Choti Diwali. Today is also known as Narak Nivaran Chaturdashi, which means ‘prevention of hell’.
The day holds a great significance in Hindu legends.
The story in legends says that on this day Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasur. The evil king, Narakasur was a brutal and dictator king who harassed the people of his kingdom. All his evils reached a peak when he kidnapped many gopis and kept them in captivity. He also stole the precious earrings of Goddess Aditi, who was the mother of all gods.
This alarmed all the gods. All the Gods approached Lord Krishna for help who promised to look into the matter. Krishna, attacked Narakasur while riding on his Garuda and beheaded the demon with his Sudarshan Chakra. Thus freeing all the Gopis and restoring peace.
On this day, people across the country celebrate the auspicious day by cleaning and decorating their homes with rangoli and lighting diyas around their houses. Performing Abhyang Snan, a holy bath is also one of the customs followed by many people.
It is a popular belief that the devotees who take the holy bath i.e. Abhyan snan on this day can avoid going to hell.
At some places, Narak Chaturdashi is also celebrated by performing a puja of the Goddess Kali. People offer puja in order to eliminate their laziness and wickedness from their life as well as bring real light into their life.
Wish you a very Happy Narak Chaturdashi. May this Narak Chaturdashi vanish all the evils in your life and keep you healthy, prosperous and blessed.
